ARIEL’S (FORMERLY GIANNI’S) 53 WEST 19TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY OPEN 1980-1984 (NOW CVS, PICTURED) “Ariel is the oldest and wholly operated women’s bar in Manhattan. As many of you know we are in an appeal against our landlord. The court ruled that we may stay provided we do not have ‘music’ after 11pm. Not even, apparently, a juke box. We seem not to have any rights as a bar anymore because of New York’s Commercial law. The landlord has all the rights. Small businesses lose all the time. Our appeal will most likely take place in the September ‘84 term. For those of you who have been supportive we ask your continued support. Appeals are expensive. We will offer other alternatives after 11pm such as video. In addition we will open Saturday and Sunday 3pm. We will continue our free buffet on Sunday as long as we have the means. Home-cooked. Our DJ will be with us 5-11pm as well. Remember Sunday is meeting day at Ariel!! We have supported you with a friendly, clean and safe bar. Our space has been made available to such groups as SAGE for fund raisers. As long as we have your support, we will continue. Bettie and Marna, Co-Owners of Ariel”
